Hey there, future Ruby Developer at Blendle

We are looking for a Rubyist, a fancy word for someone who is extraordinary good with Ruby.

Blendle is a single-page-application that’s built API-first, with a HyperMedia-architecture (HAL JSON) as a foundation. We have more than 1,000,000 users and over one and a half million monthly transactions. We use the cloud for everything and use, among others, PostgreSQL, Webmachine, NGINX/Puma, Varnish, Kubernetes and custom proxies. Everyday we import dozens of newspapers, and each week piles of magazines. On top of that, hundreds of thousands of people use the Blendle Button – our payment button on external websites – and every week an extra ten thousand users do so. Since our founding in the Netherlands, we’ve expanded to Germany and the USA – and we’re hoping to add more countries soon. That means we’d better prepare ourselves for millions of users using all kinds of languages.

Being a Ruby Developer at Blendle is a challenging job.

Many developers talk about 100% RESTful HyperMedia-API's with 100% end-to-end-test-coverage, but at Blendle that really is daily business. We had several ten thousands of users on day one, and we’re still growing quickly. Every minute we process over two thousand API-requests, and every day we handle thousands of transactions in a quick and secure way. On top of that we’re always looking for new ways to offer content and meet our users’ wishes.

Knowledge we find very important:

  • Ruby (so also without Rails, but with ActiveSupport, for comfort)

  • REST

Cool if you also have experience with:

  • Webmachine
  • Redis

  • Docker
  • End-to-end-testing with Cucumber

That was a quick summary of the technology. We’d love to tell you more about it, but before we do you might want to hear why we chose to work at Blendle.

1. Blendle fulfils an important task

Journalism is a vital component of any society, but even the greatest newspapers and magazines continuously show a decrease in sales. Blendle offers a new revenue stream which will help ensure the continuity of great journalism.

2. Simultaneously, we make many people happy

Because now they have access to all these brilliant articles without having to be subscribed to every newspaper and magazine out there. We enjoy creating software that is enjoyed by 1,000,000 users now and hopefully by many more all over the world soon.

3. A fun team

There are 100 of us at Blendle. And there’s a killer vibe. Check out these enviable snapshots of us at the office and on weekend trips:

And anyone who doesn’t care for weekend trips or swimming does something else. Because everyone does what feels right to them. Which brings us to number four:

4. Freedom

You decide when and where you work. Roland starts his day opening his laptop on a Rotterdam balcony and Jean regularly spends the night talking to himself in our chat program while coding. We assume you know what works best for you, so you don’t need us to make the rules.

Then we get to the point of our wishlist.

You are:

  • Eager to learn
  • Passionate about technology and finding apt solutions
  • Fan of the DRY principle (Don’t Repeat Yourself)

Still here? Great.
